Developmental Milestones – Social & Emotional

Infants quickly begin to interact with the world around them and become more social as they grow older. For parents and family members, it is one of the most rewarding parts of growth, as their children start to smile, and share, and play.

Here is a guide for developmental milestones in regards to social development from birth to age 4 years. This is not to be used in place of screening tests in the Pediatrician’s office but rather to help parents know what to expect at each stage. Delays in social development may need a referral to a Developmental Pediatrician.

Newborn – makes brief eye contact while being held

1 month – usually calms when picked up or held and spoken to. Looks briefly at objects

2 months – smiles responsively (social smile)

4 months – laughs out loud

6 months – smiles and pats at reflection in mirror. Begins to turn when name is called.

9 months – basic gestures begin: holds arms out to be picked up, waves bye-bye. Looks for objects that are dropped. Picks up food to feed self. Turns when name is called.

12 months – looks for objects that are hidden. Imitates gestures.

15 months – imitates scribbling. Points to ask for something.

18 months – engages other for play. Helps to dress/undress. Points to pictures in book. Looks at adult for comfort with new experiences.

24 months – parallel plays alongside other children. Undresses.

3 years – enters bathroom and urinates alone. Plays cooperatively with others. Begins imaginative play. Eats independently.

If you have concerns about your child not meeting these social and emotional milestones, please make an appointment to see your child’s Pediatrician for further evaluation.
